A RM400,000 recreation park is set to transform an open space along Jalan PJS1/30 in Taman Medan, Petaling Jaya, as the Selangor state government pushes forward with its urban greening agenda. The project represents one component of an ambitious five-park development strategy designed to enhance public spaces and community wellbeing across the district. Implementation is anticipated to commence next year, contingent on the availability of funds and budgetary priorities within Petaling Jaya City Council's planning calendar.

Selangor's local government and tourism committee chairman Datuk Ng Suee Lim outlined the vision during the state assembly sitting in Shah Alam on August 10, emphasising that the initiative extends beyond mere recreational amenity. The park's development aligns with broader environmental and social objectives, transforming underutilised land into safer, more accessible community spaces that foster outdoor activity and social interaction. This approach reflects growing recognition among Malaysian local authorities of parks' multifaceted role in urban livability, public health, and environmental sustainability.

The proposal emerged from Dr Afif Bahardin's inquiry regarding Petaling Jaya City Council's broader plans for parkland expansion and riverbank revitalisation. It prompted Ng to detail a comprehensive masterplan framework underpinning the authority's medium-term urban development strategy. The Damansara Damai People's Park Landscape Masterplan forms part of the Petaling Jaya Strategic Plan 2030, a document that articulates the municipality's aspirations for creating integrated, sustainable urban environments that prioritise both environmental conservation and community engagement.

According to the masterplan framework, five distinct urban parks will be systematically developed across the district, each serving complementary functions within the broader urban fabric. The development prioritises recreation opportunities, environmental conservation, biodiversity enhancement, and active community participation. Critically, the plans incorporate low-carbon city development principles, reflecting alignment with national sustainability commitments and international climate action frameworks that increasingly influence municipal planning decisions across Southeast Asia.

Taman Damai Belantara, designated as Urban Park 3, represents another significant component of this phased expansion strategy and will commence development next year alongside the Taman Medan project. This facility will emphasise nature-based education, incorporating distinctive features such as an urban farming area where residents can engage in food cultivation, an amphitheatre providing flexible community gathering space, and an information gallery facilitating outdoor learning. These elements collectively position the park as an educational and environmental resource rather than merely recreational infrastructure, reflecting evolving expectations regarding parks' contribution to urban resilience and knowledge transfer.

Parallel to new park development, existing facilities are receiving systematic upgrades to enhance their functionality and attractiveness to residents. Taman Damai Setia, classified as Urban Park 1, commenced improvement works this year with continuation anticipated throughout the following year. The enhancement programme incorporates a family recreation zone accommodating diverse age groups and activity preferences, a multipurpose hall enabling hosting of community events and programmes, bioswale infrastructure supporting stormwater management, and a compost centre supporting organic waste reduction initiatives. The inclusion of stall operation sites reflects attention to economic sustainability and community enterprise opportunities within public spaces.

Beyond individual park development, the Selangor government is pursuing ambitious linear park creation along the Sungai Klang riverbank, a project with implications for district-wide connectivity and environmental management. Component zones within the river reserve areas surrounding both Sungai Klang and Sungai Penchala will be transformed into green corridors and recreation facilities, effectively reclaiming previously underutilised riparian spaces. This approach addresses environmental concerns including biodiversity protection and flood mitigation while simultaneously creating recreational amenities and beautification benefits.

The linear park strategy incorporates strategic connectivity elements designed to integrate riverbank spaces with surrounding commercial and residential districts. Planned infrastructure includes pedestrian walkways and other connectivity facilities that will enable residents and workers to access riverbank areas conveniently, fostering greater utilisation and community stewardship.
