The judge presiding over the 1MDB trial has concluded that former Prime Minister Najib Razak displayed no contrition regarding his role in the scandal, instead repeatedly deflecting blame to others involved in the scheme.
In her assessment, the judge found that Najib weaponised his considerable governmental powers to construct what amounts to one of the largest financial corruption and money laundering scandals globally. The former leader's abuse of his position enabled the diversion of hundreds of millions of ringgit from the state investment fund.
The judgment highlighted Najib's refusal to accept personal accountability throughout the legal proceedings. Rather than acknowledging his involvement, the former premier consistently attempted to shift responsibility onto subordinates and associates who were entangled in the fraudulent transactions.
The 1MDB scandal has become synonymous with large-scale financial malfeasance and illicit wealth transfers. The trial proceedings revealed the intricate mechanisms through which public funds were systematically misappropriated and laundered through international financial channels.
This judicial finding underscores the severity with which the court views the former prime minister's conduct in perpetrating what authorities describe as one of the most significant corruption cases in Malaysian history.
