Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has made a forceful case for nuclear energy to become a cornerstone of Southeast Asia's energy transition, rejecting calls to exclude it from the region's long-term power generation strategy. Speaking in Subang Jaya, Anwar emphasised that Asean cannot afford to dismiss any viable low-carbon energy source if it is serious about achieving sustainable development while maintaining economic competitiveness.

The Malaysian leader's intervention into the nuclear energy debate reflects growing recognition across Southeast Asia that renewable energy sources alone may prove insufficient to meet the region's surging electricity demand. As developing economies in Asean accelerate industrialisation and urbanisation, energy consumption continues to climb at rates that outpace many developed nations. Nuclear power, with its ability to generate large quantities of baseload electricity without carbon emissions, addresses a critical gap in renewable-dominated energy portfolios that often struggle with intermittency issues.

Anwar's position carries particular significance given Malaysia's historical caution on nuclear technology. While the nation has long emphasised renewable energy development and has invested substantially in solar and hydroelectric capacity, the Prime Minister's statement signals a potential shift towards a more pragmatic, technology-neutral approach to decarbonisation. Nuclear power's operational efficiency and capacity utilisation rates can help stabilise electricity prices and provide the industrial baseload power that energy-intensive manufacturing requires.

Public perception and regulatory frameworks remain significant barriers to nuclear adoption across Southeast Asia. Memories of Fukushima and earlier nuclear incidents created enduring caution, particularly in densely populated regions. However, modern reactor designs incorporate dramatically improved safety systems, and countries like France and South Korea have successfully operated extensive nuclear fleets for decades without major incidents. Building local expertise and establishing robust regulatory frameworks, as Anwar's comments implicitly suggest, would require substantial investment in human capital and institutional development.

The financial dimension of nuclear development cannot be understated. Initial capital requirements for nuclear plants far exceed those for renewable projects, and financing mechanisms remain underdeveloped in many Asean nations.
