This shift signals that beneath the euphoria surrounding AI's transformative potential, sophisticated investors harbour serious doubts about whether trillions of dollars flooding into the sector will ever generate acceptable returns.

These sophisticated derivative contracts essentially function as insurance policies on corporate debt. Nvidia itself tapped corporate debt markets for the first time in recent years, joining peers in borrowing billions despite holding fortress balance sheets. The disconnect between companies' ostensibly strong financial positions and surging insurance demand reveals the real source of investor concern: not immediate solvency threats, but rather doubts about whether AI capital expenditures will ever generate returns justifying their scale.
CDS pricing data exposes the severity of these concerns with striking clarity. Oracle's debt insurance trades around 200 basis points, substantially above other artificial intelligence-exposed firms and the 53-basis-point average for investment-grade corporate debt generally. Currency considerations compound the concern: technology debt often issued in US dollars creates additional risks for ringgit-based investors if corporate stress forces issuers to curtail operations or reduce dividend distributions.
