There are political events, and then there are moments that define a generation. Monday night at Padang Bukit Gambir Extreme Park in Tangkak was the latter. Prime Minister and Pakatan Harapan chairman Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim stood before thousands of supporters — and millions more watching on Facebook and YouTube — and read out the names of 56 men and women who will carry PH's colours into the 16th Johor State Election on July 11.
At the helm of Pakatan Harapan's charge is Prime Minister Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who chairs the coalition with three component parties — PKR, Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah), and the Democratic Action Party (DAP). "This election is about the people of Johor and their future," Anwar declared at the event, calling on every candidate to "work hard and earn the trust of the rakyat."
Pakatan Harapan's full lineup spans all 56 state seats, distributed across three component parties: PKR contests 20 seats, DAP 17, and Amanah 19. Among the most anticipated names, former Education Minister and PKR stalwart Dr Maszlee Malik will contest the Puteri Wangsa seat (N41). Former Johor state legislative assembly speaker and Pulai MP Suhaizan Kayat has been named for Larkin (N44), while former Health Minister and Johor Amanah deputy chief Dzulkefly Ahmad takes on Kota Iskandar (N49). Batu Pahat MP Onn Abu Bakar will contest Senggarang (N24). In a historic first, Amanah has fielded its first-ever Chinese candidate, Sharon Teo Siew Hui, for Permas (N43). Other notable selections include PKR youth figure Mohd Faezuddin Puad in Kempas (N47), incumbent DAP assemblyman Andrew Chen Kah Eng defending Stulang (N45), and former Simpang Renggam MP Mohd Khuzzan Abu Bakar returning for Semerah (N17). The selection process was rigorous: more than 1,000 individuals were evaluated before the final 56 were chosen.
The social media response was extraordinary. The Facebook live stream on Anwar Ibrahim's official page, streamed under the title "PENGUMUMAN CALON PAKATAN HARAPAN PRN JOHOR KE-16," and the simultaneous YouTube broadcast were viewed by millions of Malaysians, with comments sections overflowing with messages of support, encouragement, and political debate. Supporters watching from across Malaysia — from Perlis to Sabah — flooded the streams with messages as each name was announced. The broadcast became one of the most-watched political live streams in the country's digital history.
At the venue, the atmosphere was electric. Thousands of PH supporters clad in red gathered at Padang Bukit Gambir Extreme Park in Tangkak. Top leadership from all three component parties were present, including DAP Secretary-General Anthony Loke, Amanah President Mohamad Sabu, and PH Secretary-General Saifuddin Nasution Ismail. Loke captured the evening's stakes succinctly: "Winning Johor will strengthen Anwar's position in Putrajaya and the federal government."
Nomination Day is set for June 27, 2026, with early voting on July 7 and the polling day on July 11, 2026. PH is contesting all 56 seats in a direct three-cornered and multi-cornered battle that will test the coalition's grassroots strength across both urban and rural Johor constituencies.
The road to July 11 will not be easy. But as the night at Bukit Gambir demonstrated, Pakatan Harapan is marching into this election as one — bound by shared purpose, tested by shared struggle, and led by Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, the Prime Minister who refuses to let Johor slip away.
